Love from your Grandparents

You have been showered with love from Grandpa and Grandma Morgan and Nana and Papa Hutchison. They love you so much! You flew for the first time in July to Snohomish (July 5-13) to see Nana and Papa's house on Lake Bosworth. Your cousins were all there and everyone was so excited to see you and your little cousins Ellie, Roddy, Bay and Piper (born 3 Jan 2008). You took your first trip across country when you flew home to Ohio (Aug 13-21) for your baptism and to visit Grandpa and Grandma in Youngstown. You are a great little traveler and you love your grandparents so much.

Baptism

This was a very special day for you - it was the day we "dedicated" you to Jesus and had you baptized. Grandma and Grandpa threw you an amazing celebration BBQ after the ceremony and lots of people came to celebrate your life and your future. Uncle Matt and Mike were there along with Jen and Angie, and lots of other friends. You listened so intently to the Pastor and you didn't even flinch when he splashed the water on your face. The sign up in the church read: God Loves Murphy, just as he loves all little babies.

First Jog in Baby Jogger

You are definitely a mover! You love to move, whether it's in a car, in your daddy's arms, or in a stroller, you seem to be most content with movement. That's why you love being pushed in the jogger. This was a picture from our first jog in the baby-jogger. Bailey loves to come too, even though he pulls us off-balance sometimes. And you're keeping me sane letting me burn off steam with these runs - thanks, buddy!

First Hike

What a trooper you were all the way up to Mt. Palomar! You rode on daddy's back the whole way up and loved being in the outdoors. You didn't let all the bugs get to you and you weren't afraid of the mountain lions on the trail. You sang your coo's and held on tight to your daddy's back. Mom had Bailey tight in her grasp - he was mostly pulling her up the mountain and she enjoyed the ride. The view at the top was amazing and you slept almost the whole way down. What a ride.

First Baseball Game

We had a great time up in Anaheim with Dick (Scott's Stepmom's father) and Jo. The Angels' biggest fan (Dick) has season tickets and invited us to a game in early July. The stadium in Anaheim is beautiful. We had an incredible dinner and had a great time with Dick and Jo watching the Angels beat the Oakland A's. You loved watching the players take the field and the stadium lights. Go Angels!

First Solids

You're such a good eater - Mama gave you your first rice cereal and first carrots in September and you gobbled them up like a champ! You even took the spoon out of my hand and tried to feed yourself. You still love your breastmilk and you're getting bigger and stronger everyday eating both. Now that you're in daycare, you're getting used to other people feeding you besides just your mom and dad. Next week: mashed peas...yum!

First Camping Trip

We took you camping up at San Onofre Beach one weekend in July - you slept so good in the tent and you loved the sounds of the waves. We sat around the campfire and you were amazed by the bright flames. Mom and dad got to bodysurf and we had fun sleeping in the new 3-bedroom tent - you even had your own room!

First Swim

First swimming lesson - a future Michael Phelps! You love the water and you're unafraid to dunk your little head under. It's so cute to see you squeeze your eyes so tight trying not to get any water in them. Daddy took you in the ocean back in May and you took a dip in a lake back home in Ohio on Grandpa's boat.

Tick-tock goes the clock

It's amazing how fast time has gone by since the little buddy was born nearly six months ago. Lots of "firsts" this summer...from camping, to swimming, to hiking, to traveling across country, the little guy has been a trooper! We had a lovely end of Springtime with so many visitors to (include all of our nieces and nephew) coming to Oceanside to meet their newest little cousin. Darcy took the kids to Disneyland and enjoyed their stay on the beach, while BJ and Scott made the brave trek with little Piper and Bay down to SoCal and then all the way out to Hawaii. It was amazing to have everyone together down here at one time and so special everyone came to meet Murph III.

Murph's Milestones

Everyday is a new adventure for the rookie parents...whether it's an engaging coo-exchange or our ongoing battle for peacetime in the car, it's been a great ride. Magical moments have simply become watching my husband feed the little guy before he steps out the door for work. Or maybe the tired smile he gives me first thing in the morning. That first smile back in early May was quite a caveat for us (May 10ish) and we finally got a pseudo laugh out of him just this last week (June 28, 2008). Sure, most babies hit these milestones generally around the same time frame, according to every baby blog/website I have perused, but seeing your own little one step up to the plate is a whole new experience. And today as I watch him struggle with such gallant effort to hold his head up high simply warms my heart and makes me eager for each new day and each new milestone.

Easter Arrival

Easter Sunday – it started off like any other Easter Sunday. Coffee was set on automatic for the early morning reveille and plans were set to meet our good friends down at the Beach in Encinitas for a sunrise service to honor the day and what it stood for. The morning would be well-rewarded via the Easter brunch that awaited us ala party of 6 at the Karl Strauss in San Diego. A typical Murphy and Faye holiday, or so one would suspect, except for the all-nighter we’d pulled the night prior due in large part to the contractions of an increased rate (20 minutes, 15, 12, 8 and so on) – our little guy was ready to make his debut. It’s amazing how nature gives us such subtle and deliberate messages on cue and, in this case, with authority. The first pains came on Saturday afternoon, and then well into the evening hours. Were we ready?
Jeez, it had been over 38 weeks and counting and yet it seemed something was missing. Hospital bag was packed, nursery set, clothes washed with Dreft and all put away, and even the diaper bag was customized with our little buddy in mind, diapers, wipes, cream and all. That’s when paranoia set in – the first sign we perhaps we had prematurely patted ourselves on the back for “graduating” from the Intensive Childbirth Course” at the hospital like champs (see inset - see even a certificate to prove it), the Cadillac of all car seats (thanks to rock-star sister and turbo mom BreAnna) sat sadly in the box in our garage, quietly calling out: “install me, daddy.” Given that the pain in my gut was growing ever more intense and I had little room for patience at this point, I do believe my tone may have been not just fanatic, but passionately vulgar when (not kindly) requesting my husband to get off his ass and get the damn thing installed. To which he snapped to and got right on it, bless his heart, breaking out the instructions and installing it with all the love and cluelessness of a first-time dad. Rest assured, it’s secured as per California Highway Patrol standards and our little buddy was set up for success.
Ok, so now we’re ready. Off to the lovely morning service, noticing the contractions are now 3-5 minutes apart, we excused ourselves from the Easter feast and headed straight to the hospital instead, with one stop first. Our first born, Bailey, our loyal Golden Retriever had made the trip with us to the beach, and since dogs aren’t allowed in Labor and Delivery, we dumped the poor sap at home to guard the house while we were out. Upon checking in at Tri City Hospital, we were both calm and elated, so excited and emotional that we would be meeting our son so very soon. We had no idea what adventures lie ahead of us, but with wide eyes and eager hearts, we headed into triage and at “3 cm” we received our marching orders. Nearly 12 hours later, with some unmentionable details and after a crazy ride, our little Murph made his grand arrival. It was our happiest moment...

Rib-kicking Bandit

Who would have thought we'd make it this far? Sure, it's not uncommon for a happy young couple in their 30's to manage to get pregnant and make it just 12 days out from their 1st baby's due date, but when it's happening to you, when you're in the moment, when you hear your doctor mutter the words, "yep, 1.5 cm dilated", when the nursery is finally complete (at month 9), and when you feel that little bandit do a little dance between your ribs, it does finally hit you. The incredible bundle of joy and Morgan-made bun that's been baking for nearly 40 weeks now (yes, 10 months, not the proverbial 9) is prepped to make his premiere. And what great adventures lie before us: labor, delivery, first day at home, nursing, meeting family and friends, napping, crying, cooing, changing, smiling, laughing, grasping. We'll soak it all in, cherish every waking moment (literally), and be the best parents we can be. Get ready, little bandit - you're in for a crazy ride.
